On the Farm Arts & Crafts: Vermont Open Farm Week 2024

The 10th Annual Vermont Open Farm Week is coming up and it is jam-packed with a wide variety of events for people of all ages. Get your creative juices flowing with on-the-farm arts and crafts, including flower bouquet making, garlic braiding, sun printing, and more! Find a new way to connect with the land and express yourself with one of these arts and crafts experiences.

Sunday, August 4th

Garlic Braiding Workshop at Milkweed Farm

Westminister | 11:00am - 12:00pm

Create your own garlic braid using beautiful Milkweed Farm flowers (10ish stems) and softneck garlic (12 bulbs). Children are welcome (with adult supervision). Registration costs $45 (covers materials and workshop) and space is limited; RSVP is required.

Create Your Own Wool Pot Holder/Hot Pad at Cynefin Farm
Townshend | August 4th, 10th, and 11th from 1:00pm - 2:30pm

Make your own wool kitchen "tool." This class will be held during the weaving demonstration, linked here. Cost is $10 for materials. Please arrive on time to allow for completion of your project. 

Weaving with Wool at Cynefin Farm
Townshend | August 4th, 10th, and 11th from 1:00pm - 2:30pm

Learn how to produce a wool rug with raw wool on a primitive loom. Cost is free and no registration necessary. 

 

Wednesday, August 7th

Kids' Day & Felting Workshop at the Champlain Islands Farmers Market

South Hero | 3:00 - 6:00pm

Celebrate Vermont Open Farm Week with family friendly fun at the Champlain Islands Farmers Market's Kids' Days in South Hero! In addition to 20+ fantastic local vendors, there will be fun games and activities to encourage kids to learn about local agriculture including a free wool felting workshop (for all ages!) from Blue Heron Farm, a Farmers Market Bingo scavenger hunt, a fun and fascinating interactive Watershed Model from Grand Isle Conservation District & South Hero Land Trust, cornhole toss, and more! Get your face painted, have a scoop of gelato, and enjoy a hot sandwich as you shop for beautiful handmade jewelry, handknit goods, tie dyes, artwork, herbal bodycare products, and more!

Art on the Farm at Adam's Berry Farm

Join the folks at Adam's Berry Farm to make berry block prints and other farm inspired art. No registration needed and a $5 suggested donation.

 

Saturday, August 10th

Poetry Reading and Food at Nama Farm
Marshfield | 10:00am – 4:00pm

Join Burlington Vermont Poet *Rajnii Eddins* as he performs poems from his books at Noon and 2 p.m. and shares from his life in Vermont as a Black teaching artist poet and educator.

 

Sun Printing (Cyanotype Class) at Sweetland Farm
Norwich | 11:00am - 1:00pm

Learn the very simple and fun process of cyanotype with local artist Emil O’Melia! Just $15 per person and SO. MUCH. FUN. Great for older kids and families, too! Cost $15 per person. Please register for this class!

Plant and Paint with Calves at Guillemette Farm Stand
Shelburne | 11:00am - 1:00pm

Stop by Guillemette Farm Stand between 11am and 1pm on Sat, Aug 10 to plant a sunflower in a pot, paint the pot, and hang out with the calves! The activity is first come first serve, and it will be held in the activity area where are calves are.

Fledge Fest: Music and Arts at Fledgling Farmstead
Turnbridge | 1:00pm - 12:00am

Come to Fledgling Farmstead's beautiful hilltop event space for a day of all-ages fun, featuring the Climate Farmer Stories Exibit, art activities, woodland trails and installations, and music into the evening featuring Kotoka Brass, Kalbells, DJ Broosha and fire spinning. Food trucks featuring locally-sourced ingredients and locally-brewed beer will be available to purchase.

 

Sunday, August 11th

Flower Design Workshop at Chandler Pond Farm

South Wheelock | 4:00pm - 5:30pm

Let your creativity run free - design your own arrangement from Chandler Pond Farm's cut flower barn and open u-pick garden! Guidance by Dahlia's mom Tina, a farmer florist with decades of growing and designing successes. Tine will lead a 1.5 hour workshop with tips and tricks for creating beautiful bouquets, and you'll leave with your own creation! Light refreshments will be provided. Bring a container that's special to you, or choose from an eclectic mix of vases and repurposed containers. Bring snippers if you have them. Cost is $60 per person and please pre-register by August 6th.

Fun with Flowers at Adam's Berry Farm
Charlotte | 10:00am - 1:00pm

Bring your kids to Adam's Berry Farm to make a beautiful wall hanging with flowers from the farm. For ages 6 and up. Registration costs $25.
