Learn Something New! | Open Farm Week 2022

For seven days in August (7th – 14th), farms around Vermont open up their doors to the public for a unique on-farm experience. With 53 farms hosting over 105 events during Open Farm Week, there’s a lot going on!

Cheesemaking, using natural dyes, maple syrup, cider, soapmaking the list goes on and on.  During Open Farm Week 2022, you'll have the opportunity to learn how our farmers and food producers grow food and make products from our working landscape.  Go behind the scenes, join a workshop or take a class. Learning something new and seeing something for the first time is exciting and makes Vermont Open Farm week a can't miss annual event.

Sunday, August 7th

 

Seed to Soap Herb Farm Tour
Farm Craft VT, Shelburne
2:00pm - 4:00pm

You're invited to take a tour of the Farm Craft VT herb garden and apiary, where the owner of Rebecca Lindenmeyr will describe each herb grown and its uses, and the process of harvesting, drying, and distilling herbs for their essential oils - and how they are incorporated into products. Rebecca will also open one of the hives and pass out samples of the fresh honey inside and discuss organic beekeeping and what it means to be a Bee Friendly Farm certified by the Pollinator Partnership.

DIY Herbal Tea
Hillside Botanicals, Randolph
10am-12pm

Enjoying a cup of tea is one of the most nourishing ways to infuse a taste of nature into daily rhythms. Join Clinical Herbalist and Organic Herb Farmer Sarah Shaw to learn tips and tricks for making herbal tea blends at home. Visitors will explore basic formulations, flavors and herbal actions, and even ideas for creating a tea garden. Materials, including organic herbs, will be provided. Tea drinkers and growers of all levels are welcome.

Wool Spinning Workshop
Cynefin Farm, Townshend
12pm-3pm

Learn the art of spinning cleaned, combed, and carded wool from Cynefin Farm's flock into beautiful yarn! There are wheels and space available for 4 participants. The cost of the workshop is $25. Pre-register by emailing [email protected] or texting 1-802-376-6345. Payment is due at time of event.

Dowsing for Spiritual Growth
Earthwise Farm & Forest, Bethel
1pm-4pm

Finding ways to feel present, alive, compassionate and engaged can lift us up and help us remember who we are. This class will help participants build an intimate relationship with themselves, the land, and the animals - through dowsing - bringing a healing and rejuvenating component to the place where you reside - both inside and out. What is Dowsing? Dowsing is defined as the art of discovering energies, substances, or objects not apparent to the senses, usually using dowsing rods, pendulums, or other dowsing tools.

Mother Nature provides an incredible palette of colors with which to dye yarn from Cynefin Farm. Join Shiloh Tedrow for a harvesting walk! Please wear long pants, long sleeves, and good hiking shoes. No-Till Vegetable Transition
Cedar Circle Farm & Education Center, East Thetford
6:30 pm

Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center is committed to no-till and minimum-till research and transitioning the farm to a regenerative organic production model. Join our Research and Development team for a tour of Cedar Circle's no-till plots. Hear how they transitioned from organic conventional tillage to no-till production and learn about nutrient management and the weed challenges that come with it.

Garlic Braiding Workshop
Last Resort Farm, Monkton

Garlic braiding blends beauty, spice, and wellness! Join Farmer Eugenie Doyle for an on-farm garlic braiding workshop! $30/person includes instruction and enough garlic and flowers to make a 16-bulb braid. If you have your own materials, it's just $10/person for the instruction and farm tour. No fees or charges for self identified members of BIPOC community.

Tis Twixt Women’s Retreat: Summer’s Bounty

Butter, Yogurt & Cheesemaking Class

Learn how to make delicious butter, yogurt, ricotta cheese, and Fromage Blanc cheese from organic, grass-fed raw milk! The class is set up in the farmer's very own humble kitchen for hands-on learning, food tasting and discussions that can take the group all over the place...from the nutrient value of farm fresh milk and the joys of homestead farming, to having a family cow, buying local, and more.
